What are RCICs and who is permitted to give paid advice on immigration matters?

What are Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC)?
RCICs, are legally authorized representatives and members in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC). They are specially trained consultants, qualified and familiar with Canadian immigration law and policies.
Specialist knowledge is required as well as successful passing of a federal certification exam ("Full Skill Exam" or FSE) which is followed after successfully completion of a graduate course at the designated academic institution.
Since the law is constantly changing, immigration consultants also need to make sure that they are up-to-date and have to participate in a certain amount of Continuing Professional Development courses every year.
Since the field of immigration is comprehensive, RCICs for the most part specialize in certain fields, professions or geographical regions.
Fees might vary based on the complexity of an application, number of family members and category/class under which an application is made.
However, the applicable GOVERNMENT fees are the same for everyone worldwide (to be found on the official IRCC website).
Who may charge a fee?
Paid representatives may charge a fee to advise you in questions you might have on Canadian immigration processes or handing your application if they are:
  • Immigration consultants who are members in good standing of the Immigration https://college-ic.ca/protecting-the-public/find-an-immigration-consultant,
  • Lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society,
  • Notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Quebec
Be careful if promised a ‘Guaranteed Job’ or ‘Guaranteed Visa’.
There is no such thing as a 100% guaranteed job or visa offer!  Every applicant will be examined (medically/criminally) by the Government (formerly CIC, now known as IRCC) and an authorized officer will make a decision based on the information received.
Therefore be mindful and only provide genuine documents, since otherwise an application will be refused and you might be banned from coming to Canada for several years.
Also be aware of scammers, the official government website is www.cic.gc.ca.
